MicroSociety is a twelve-week simulation for Year 5. Pupils create their own society and set up the institutions required by that society - government, a civil service, an economy, businesses, and a legal system. My Voice London holds the UK Trademark for MicroSociety. Pupils learn about economic concepts such as scarcity and supply and demand. Visiting speakers deliver master classes on human resources, business planning, taxation and government. |

The children then make their own decisions about how much to model their society on the real world and how much to invent. MicroSociety is based on the Minisociety programme developed by Dr Marilyn Kourilsky in Los Angeles. It was adapted by My Voice London for use in UK schools. Sometimes I sit in my bed and I'm scared and I don't know why and I realise that I am scared of life... what can happen and what you have to do. MicroSociety has shown me that there is nothing to be afraid of and I am glad. The words of this 10 year-old demonstrate why a study visit from Ofsted has endorsed the MicroSociety programme. |
The team concluded that it provides pupils with very good learning experiences to develop their economic and business understanding, and their enterprise skills, and has excellent potential for further development.
